Heinrich Gagern, Freiherr von

Heinrich Gagern, Freiherr von , 1799–1880, German statesman. A Hessian parliamentary leader and leading advocate of German unity, he became (1848) president of the Frankfurt Parliament . He at first favored Prussian leadership and the exclusion of Austria from German affairs but later reversed his stand.
