Othon Friesz (Achille Émile Othon Friesz) (ôtôN´ frē´ĕs, äshēl´ āmēl´), 1879–1949, French painter. He studied under Bonnat at the École des Beaux-Arts, along with Matisse, Marquet, and Rouault. Early influenced by impressionism, he adopted the bold, colorful style of the painters involved in the development of fauvism. He exhibited with them until 1908 when his work changed to become less explosive. His Miarka (Art Inst., Chicago) is characteristic of his later period.
