József Eötvös, Baron , 1813-71, Hungarian writer and statesman. A vigorous reformer and a Christian Liberal, he was minister of public instruction and religious affairs in 1848 and again in 1867. His novel The Village Notary (1844-46, tr. 1850) exposed the corrupt practices of county governments.
