Loren Corey Eiseley

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition

Loren Corey Eiseley , 1907-77, American anthropologist, b. Lincoln, Nebr. He taught anthropology at the Univ. of Kansas (1937-44), was chair of sociology and anthropology at Oberlin College (1944-47), and was professor and chair of the anthropology department at the Univ. of Pennsylvania (1947-59). He was named Benjamin Franklin and University Professor of Anthropology and History of Science in 1961. A specialist in early peoples of the Americas, he achieved fame as a naturalist and humanist writer. His works include All the Strange Hours (1975).
