Truman Handy Newberry

Truman Handy Newberry 1864–1945, American naval officer and cabinet official, b. Detroit. He engaged in various financial enterprises and helped organize (1902) the Packard Motor Car Company. A founder and active member of Michigan state naval brigade, he served as lieutenant on the U.S.S. Yosemite in the Spanish-American War. He later was Assistant Secretary (1905–8) and Secretary (1908–9) of the Navy, and in World War I was assistant to the commandant of the Third Naval Dist. Newberry was elected Republican Senator from Michigan in 1918, but his conviction by a Michigan court of corruption in obtaining the nomination prevented him from taking his seat. The case was dismissed by the Supreme Court, a Senate committee exonerated him, and he entered the Senate in Jan., 1922. He resigned eleven months later.
