Dumaguete , city (1990 pop. 80,262), capital of Negros Oriental prov., SE Negros, the Philippines. A busy interisland-shipping port at the entrance to Tañon Strait (which separates the islands of Negros and Cebu), it is also a trade and cultural center. Silliman Univ. (founded 1901) and Foundation Univ. are there.
