Dortmund-Ems Canal , waterway, 165 mi (266 km) long, NW Germany, from Dortmund to Emden. Built from 1892 to 1899, it connects the industrial Ruhr district with the Ems River and the North Sea. It is connected to the Rhine River by two canals.
