Dalhousie University

The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition

Dalhousie University , at Halifax, N.S., Canada; nonsectarian; coeducational; founded 1818 by the 9th earl of Dalhousie. Except for a few years between 1838 and 1845, Dalhousie did not function as a university until 1863. It has faculties of arts and social sciences, science, graduate studies, dentistry, law, medicine, health professions, and management studies, as well as schools of resource and environmental studies, public administration, library and information studies, public affairs, and continuing education. It has research institutes in foreign policy, international development, and oceanography. The Dalhousie Review, a literary quarterly, is published there. The Univ. of King's College (founded 1789) is associated with Dalhousie.
