David Daiches
The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
David Daiches , 1912-2005, British critic, b. Sunderland. A graduate of Edinburgh Univ. and Oxford (M.A., 1934; Ph.D., 1939), Daiches taught at several English universities and wrote many works of criticism. They include The Novel and the Modern World (1939), A Study of Literature (1948), A Critical Approach to Literature (1956), A Critical History of English Literature (1960), and More Literary Essays (1968). He also wrote studies of Burns, Milton, Boswell, Scott, Lawrence, and Virginia Woolf, and a biography of Charles Edward Stuart. His later books include guides to cultural monuments in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the British Isles. He was also the author of two autobiographies (1956, 1971), poetry, and a reference work on Scotch whiskey (1969).
