Sir Simonds D'Ewes
The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition
Sir Simonds D'Ewes , 1602-50, English antiquarian, b. Coxden. He collected many old manuscripts and made transcriptions of others with the intention of writing a history of England; these now form part of the Harleian Collection of the British Museum. His valuable collection of the journals of the Parliaments during the reign of Elizabeth I were published in 1682. D'Ewes was a member of the Long Parliament; he sided against Charles I and then against the army and was expelled from Parliament in Pride's Purge (see under Pride, Thomas ). Portions of his diary of the period have been edited by Wallace Notestein (1923) and Willson Coates (1942, repr. 1970).
