Howard Carter

Howard Carter 1874-1939, English Egyptologist. He served (1891-99) with the Egyptian Exploration Fund and later helped to reorganize the antiquities administration for the Egyptian government. Carter's successful excavations (1906-22) with Lord Carnarvon in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt, include the tombs of Amenophis I, Hatshepsut, and Thutmose IV. His greatest achievement was the discovery in 1922 of the tomb of Tutankhamen. With A. C. Mace he wrote The Tomb of Tut.ankh.amen (3 vol., 1923-33; repr. 1963).
