Weil, Bruno
Weil, Bruno, German conductor; b. Hahnstätten, Nov. 24, 1949. He studied with Swarowsky in Vienna and Ferrara in Italy. He conducted opera in Wiesbaden (1975-77) and Braunschweig (1977-81). After winning 2nd prize in the Karajan conducting competition in 1979, he appeared with the Berlin Phil. In 1980 he conducted at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He became Generalmusikdirektor in Augsburg in 1981. In 1984 he was a guest conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Sym. Orch. in Tokyo. In 1985 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera conducting Aida. He conducted Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival in 1988, the year he also made his U.S. debut at a N.Y. Schubertiade. During the 1990-91 season, he toured Germany with the English Chamber Orch. In 1991 he became music director of the Carmel (Calif.) Bach Festival. He made his Glyndebourne Festival debut conducting Così fan tutte in 1992. In 1994 he became Generalmusikdirektor of the Duisburg Sym. Orch.
