McLaughlin, Marie
McLaughlin, Marie, Scottish soprano; b. Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Nov. 2, 1954. She studied at Notre Dame Coll. of Education and with Joan Alexander in Glasgow, and later at the London Opera Centre and the National Opera Studio. In 1978 she made her debut as Tatiana at the Aldeburgh Festival, and as Anna Gomez in The Consul at the English National Opera in London. Her debut at London’s Covent Garden followed in 1980 as Barbarina, where she subsequently sang such roles as Susanna, Zerlina, Nannetta, and Britten’s Tytania. After singing Ilia in Rome in 1982 and Marzelline in Berlin in 1984, she was engaged as Micaëla at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1985. On Dec. 10, 1986, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. as Marzelline. Her first appearance at the Salzburg Festival was as Susanna in 1987. In 1988 she sang Adina at Milan’s La Scala and in 1990 Zerlina at the Vienna Festival. Following an engagement as Despina in Geneva and a tour to Japan with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, as Susanna in 1992, she sang Weill’s Jenny at the Opéra de la Bastille in Paris in 1995. In 1996 she appeared as Donna Elvira in Lausanne.
