Jordan, Armin (Georg)

Jordan, Armin (Georg), Swiss conductor; b.Lucerne, April 9, 1932. He received his musical training in Lucerne and Geneva. After holding the post of first conductor at the Zürich Opera (1963–68), he was conductor in St. Gallen (1968–71) and at the Basel Opera (1968–89). From 1973 to 1985 he was music director of the Lausanne Chamber Orch., with which he toured the U.S. in 1983. From 1985 to 1997 he was chief conductor of l’rchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva, while concurrently serving as principal guest conductor of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris from 1986 to 1993. He conducted the soundtrack and also portrayed the role of Amfortas, with the vocal part dubbed in by Wolfgang Schöne, for the Syberberg film version of Parsifal.Jordan has appeared as a guest conductor with various opera houses and orchs., and has won particular distinction for his performances of the French repertoire.
