Haas, Karl (Wilhelm Jacob)

Haas, Karl (Wilhelm Jacob), German conductor and musicologist; b. Karlsruhe, Dec. 27, 1900; d. London, July 7, 1970. He studied at the univs. of Munich and Heidelberg, then worked for the Karlsruhe and Stuttgart radios. He was active as a collector of valuable early instruments, and made microfilms of early music. In 1939 he emigrated to England, and in 1943 organized the London Baroque Ensemble, which he led until 1966 in performances of little-known Baroque music. He also ed. works by Haydn, Boccherini, and Cherubini.
