Corteccia, (Pier) Francesco

Corteccia, (Pier) Francesco , Italian composer and organist; b. Florence, July 27, 1502; d. there, June 27, 1571. He sang at S. Giovanni Battista in Florence. He later studied for the priesthood, and also received instruction in music from Bernardo Pisano. After serving as chaplain at S. Giovanni Battista (1527–31), he was organist at S. Lorenzo (1531–32) and at S. Giovanni Battista (1535–39). He subsequently was maestro di cappella there and at the Florence Cathedral until his death, and also was in the service of Duke Cosimo the Great. His musical intermezzi to various stage works (e.g. to Francesco d’Ambra’s Ilfurto, 1544) are noteworthy in the development of opera. He also composed wedding music for Duke Cosimo, nine pieces for 4, 6, and 8 Voices (Venice, 1539), three books of madrigals for 4, 4, and 5 to 6 Voices, respectively (Venice, 1544, 1547, 1547), a Passion, two books of music for Tenebrae services (1570), motets, and hymns. Several of his works have been publ. in modern editions.
