Pius X, Saint
Pius X, Saint (1835–1914) Pope (1903–14), b. Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto. He opposed religious modernism, placing several modernist books on the Index in 1907. Pius also condemned the separation of Church and state in France and recodified canon law (a revision published posthumously in 1917). He was canonized in 1954. His feast day is August 21.
