Charles VI (1685–1740) Holy Roman Emperor (1711–40) and King of Hungary as Charles III. His claim to the Spanish throne against the grandson of Louis XIV, Philip V, supported by the powers opposed to Louis, caused the War of the Spanish Succession. After his election as Emperor (1711), he gave up his Spanish claim as international support for it fell away. He spent much of his reign trying to secure the succession of his daughter, Maria Theresa, to his Austrian possessions.
