Jacques René Tenon

1724-1816

French surgeon who helped describe the interior structure of the eye, several parts of which are named in his honor. This knowledge helped scientists to better understand how the eye and its parts function and made it possible to start conducting eye surgery. Although surgical techniques at that time were crude, it was still possible to conduct some surgery once the basic structure and function were known.
