Urban V
Urban V (1310–70) Pope (1362–70), b. Guillaume de Grimoard. Crowned at Avignon, he tried (in 1367) to return the papacy from Avignon to Rome. Insurrections at Rome and the Papal States forced him back to Avignon in 1370. As pope, he made a fruitless attempt to unite the Roman and Orthodox Churches.
