Beinecke Brothers Memorial Scholarships (Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To encourage a junior student to continue studies in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Focus: Arts, Humanities, Social sciences. Qualif.: Applciant must be a junior student; must be a U.S citizen or U.S national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands; must have a superior intellectual ability (typically a minimum 3.5 GPA); must have a financial need. Criteria: Applicants will be evaluated based on their academic standing and by their plans to pursue their career in college teaching and/or research. Preference is given to candidates for whom the scholarship would enable her/him to attend graduate school.

Funds Avail.: $34,000. To Apply: Applicant must complete a application form (available online); must have a current resume; must provide a 1000-word personal statement describing background, interests, career goals, and plan for graduate study; must have a official copies of all college transcripts; must have three letters of recommendation from faculty members. Deadline: February 15.

Jack Kent Coke Graduate Scholarships (Graduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To provide financial support for qualified students intending to continue their education in graduate school. Focus: General studies. Qualif.: Applicant must be a senior or recent graduate from an accredited college or university in the U.S; must have a cumulated GPA of 3.5 or better; must have a plan to attend graduate school. Criteria: Applicants will be evaluated based on their ability and achievements, unmet financial need, a will to succeed, leadership and public service, critical thinking ability, and an appreciation for or participation in the arts and humanities.

Funds Avail.: $50,000. To Apply: Applicant must complete the application form online; must have the parent financial information forms, signed applicant and both his or her parents, with two copies of all requested attachments; must provide a two recommendation letter; must have the official copies of transcripts from all colleges attended; must have the resume/curriculum vita; must have a portfolio (for applicants in the Arts). Deadline: February 14.

John Gardner Fellowships (Undergraduate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To encourage the graduating seniors to pursue the public service career of their choice. Focus: Public service. Qualif.: Applicant must be a senior graduating from the University of California, Berkeley; must be a United States citizen. Criteria: Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria: (1) Demonstrated commitment to public service; (2) Record of academic accomplishment; (3) Maturity, personal integrity, and sense of responsibility; (4) Creativity, energy, and initiative; (5) Leadership potential: the ability to inspire others to action.

Funds Avail.: $27,500. Number Awarded: 3. To Apply:

Applicant must submit one copy of the complete application form (available online); must have a formal resume; must have an official academic transcript; must have three letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a faculty member who is familiar with the applicant's university level work. Application materials must be sent to: Institute of Governmental Program, 111 Moses Hall, No. 2370, Berkeley, CA 94720-2370. Deadline: February 27.

Donald A. Strauss Scholarships (Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To encourage junior students to pursue a public service career of their choice. Focus: Public service. Qua-lif.: Applicant must be a full-time junior; must be in the upper third class (typically a minimum 3.3 GPA); must have plan to devote significant part of life to public service. Criteria: Applicants will be evaluated based on their public service project proposal, outstanding leadership potential, effective communication skills and who “wish to make a difference” in local, regional, or national communities.

Funds Avail.: $10,000. To Apply: Applicant must complete the application form (available online); must have one-page resume that includes work history and community service experience; must have one-page autobiographical statement; must have four-page proposal for a community service project; must have completed the acceptance form; must have two or three letters of recommendation from individuals who are well-acquainted worth the student's academic and/or service work; must have an official copies of all college transcripts. Deadline: February 15.

Udall Scholarships (Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To provide financial support for outstanding sophomore and junior students. Focus: Environmental science, Health care services. Qualif.: Applicant must be a student who studies the environmental and related fields; must be a Native American or Alaska Native in fields related to health care or tribal public policy; Applicant must be a full-time sophomore or junior students; must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien; must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA. Criteria: Applicants will be selected based on how they demonstrate the area of study and public or community service activities, commitment to and potential for making significant contributions to their fields.

Funds Avail.: $5,000 for educational expenses. UC Berkeley selection committee will select the university's nominee based on the application materials and criteria. To Apply: Applicant must complete the application form; must have a 800-word essay discussing a significant public speech, legislative act, or public policy statement by Congressman Udall and its relationship to the applicant's interest or coursework; must have a three letters of recommendation from: (1) a faculty member who can discuss the applicant's potential; (2) a faculty member in the applicant's of study; (3) another individual who can attest to the applicant's capabilities; must have the official college transcripts. Deadline: February 20.
