Parík, Ivan

Parík, Ivan, Slovak composer and pedagogue; b. Bratislava, Aug. 17, 1936. Following private instruction from Alexander Albrecht (1951–53), he studied with Ocenás (composition) and Schimpl (conducting) at the Bratislava Cons. (until 1958). He completed his composition studies with Moyzes at the Bratislava Academy of Music and Drama (1958–62). From 1959 to 1968 he worked as a program director for the Czechoslovak TV in Bratislava. He was a part-time teacher at the Bratislava Academy of Music and Drama from 1962 to 1968, and then taught there full time. In 1984 he became head of its theory dept. In 1990 he was made a prof, and vice-rector of the Academy. From 1993 until his retirement in 1997 he served as its rector. In his output, Parík has made use of both tonal and serial resources with excursions into the realm of electroacoustic music.
