Lupi, Johannes

Lupi, Johannes, distinguished Franco-Flemish composer; b. c. 1506; d. Cambrai, Dec. 20,1539. He was a choirboy at Notre Dame Cathedral in Cambrai (1514-21), then studied philosophy at the Univ. of Louvain (1522). After returning to Cambrai Cathedral as a parvus vicarius (1526), he was made master of the choristers (1527). He then was magnus vicarius and subdeacon (from 1530, except for a period of ill health [1535-37]). He excelled as a composer of motets; also wrote many chansons. Attaingnant and Juliet publ. a book of his motets in 1542, which helped to spread his fame. B. Blackburn ed. his complete works (3 vols., Stuttgart, 1980-89).
