Franzl, Ignaz (Franz Joseph)
Franzl, Ignaz (Franz Joseph), German violinist, conductor, and composer, father of Ferdinand (Ignaz Joseph) Franzl; b. Mannheim, June 3, 1736; d. there, Sept. 3, 1811. He entered the Mannheim Court Orch. as a boy of 11. He became co-concertmaster in 1774, and was conductor from 1790 to 1803. He made several concert tours with his son; composed syms. and music for the violin, and also wrote for the stage. His Singspiel Die Luftballe was produced in Mannheim with excellent success (April 15,1787). He also wrote music for Shakespeare’s plays.
