Shopworn Angel
Shopworn Angel ★★★ 1938
Weepy melodrama about a sophisticated actress who leads on a naive Texas soldier who's in New York prior to being shipped out for WWI duty. Later, just before she goes on stage, she learns he's been killed at the front. She rallys to sing “Pack Up your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag and Smile, Smile, Smile.” Lots of tears. Adapted from the story “Private Pettigrew's Girl” by Dana Burnet. This remake of the sametitled 1929 film considerably softened the characters. Remade again in 1959 as “That Kind of Woman.” 85m/B VHS . Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, Walter Pidgeon, Nat Pendleton, Alan Curtis, Sam Levene, Hattie McDaniel, Charley Grapewin, Charles D. Brown; D: H.C. Potter; W: Waldo Salt; C: Joseph Ruttenberg.
