Khomiakov, Alexis Stepanovich (1804–60). Russian lay theologian. He was at the centre of the Slavophil movement and was very influential, though his writings are mainly occasional. He saw the Orthodox Church as preserving the truest form of Christianity, finding its unity in sobornost′, a togetherness brought about in the Church by the Holy Spirit, deeper than the authoritarian unity of the Papacy or the individualist fragmentation of the Protestants.
