Stamitz, Johann Wenzel [ Jan Václav Antonín Stamic] (b Německý Brod, Bohemia, 1717; d Mannheim, 1757). Bohem.-born violinist and composer. Played vn. at coronation of Karl VII 1742 and was heard by Elector of Mannheim who made him court violinist and mus. dir. in 1743. Raised the orch. there to standards which became famous throughout Europe and influenced composers such as Haydn and Mozart. Visited Paris 1754–5, playing at Concert Spirituel. As composer, greatly expanded sonata-form principles in the sym., giving new importance to development section. Wrote 58 syms., 15 vn. concs., vn. sonatas, and much else.
