Flores

Flores, department in southern Uruguay not far from Montevideo. It was founded in 1885 to commemorate General Venancio Flores, born in Trinidad, the capital of the department. The small territory of 1,982 square miles has 25,104 inhabitants (2001), most of whom live in the capital, Trinidad. Most of them are engaged in raising sheep and in garden agriculture. Although the region maintains some agricultural traditions, it is also completely digitized in terms of its communications system.
