Emmaus (ĕmā´əs), in the Bible. 1 Place, outside Jerusalem, where Cleopas and another disciple met the risen Christ. 2 Place, where Judas Maccabeus defeated Gorgias. It is now called Imwas (West Bank) and lies halfway between Jerusalem and Jaffa, Israel.

Emmaus, borough (1990 pop. 11,157), Lehigh co., E Pa., a suburb adjoining Allentown; inc. 1859. It is chiefly residential, with some light manufacturing and printing and publishing. Emmaus was founded in 1740 by Moravians. The Bieber house (1734) is of historic interest.
