Björling, Jussi (Johan) (b Stora Tuna, Sweden, 1911; d Island of Siar Oe, 1960). Swed. tenor, taught by father, a professional tenor. Early public appearances in male v. qt. with father and 2 brothers. Studied in Gothenburg and Stockholm, 1928, with Joseph Hislop. Official début Stockholm 1930 as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni (had already sung Lamplighter in Manon Lescaut there a month earlier). Débuts Vienna 1936; Chicago 1937; CG 1939—did not sing again at CG until 1960; NY Met 1938–59 (excluding war years).
