African Union

African Union (AU) Intergovernmental organization. Previously known as the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Founded in 1963 and renamed in 2001, it aims to safeguard the interests and independence of all African states, encourage the continent's development, and settle disputes among member states. Its headquarters are in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In 2003, the AU elected its first president, Alpha Oumar Konaré.
