Donation Donation of Constantine the grant by which the emperor Constantine supposedly conferred on Pope Sylvester I (314–35) and his successors spiritual supremacy over the other Christian patriarchs; the document was a forgery of the 9th century, but in the Middle Ages was widely regarded as important to claims of papal power in Europe.
Donation of Pepin the undertaking by the Carolingian king Pepin III to win for the papacy lands which had been conquered by the Lombards; these lands became the foundation of the Papal States.
