Scheveningen, battle of, 1653. Naval battle off the Dutch coast during the first Anglo-Dutch War. Martin Tromp was ordered to sea to try to break the English blockade under Monck. Tromp was killed early in the action on 10 August and the Dutch lost eleven vessels. It is sometimes known as the battle of Texel.
