Orthez, battle of, 1814. Wellington's troops crossed the Bidassoa into France in October 1813 but Soult's army continued to resist strongly, falling back on a series of river lines. On 27 February 1814, with a slight numerical superiority, Soult tried to hold the line of the Gave de Pau at Orthez, but was badly beaten. On 12 April 1814 Wellington occupied Toulouse, where he received the news of Napoleon's abdication.
