Jewel Wasp

Meet a cuckoo wasp (a.k.a. jewel wasp; Chrysis fasciata daphne, family Chrysididae). They are tiny but the most beautiful wasps in Japan. The head and thorax shined in metallic blue/green and the abdomen was as colourful as rainbow. They are cleptoparasitic on a specific potter wasp (Discoelius japonicus, family Eumenidae) whose nesting activities had been witnessed around here (view also http://youtube.com/watch?v=j_IB371_0pc ). Mid-September 2008 in Japan. http://picasaweb.google.co.jp/lh/photo/4JA7zrLE37AfPmmlzvVcKw?feat=directlink
