Cruelty to Children.

Benjamin Waugh - I was looking at a blue plaque in Greenwich - thinking that it was the writer Evelyn Waugh - Brideshead Revisited - but when I got closer I found it was Benjamin. I later discovered that the 'Reverend' Benjamin Waugh worked with poor children in the 'slums' of Greenwich and thought that 'Workhouses' were not the places to stop children getting involved with crime. He set up a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children which eventually with Queen Victoria as Patron became the National Society.
