Allan Bakke, Patrick Chavis and Affirmative Action

In 1973 Allan Bakke was denied admission to UC Davis Medical School even though the school admitted 16 "diversity" applicants with much lower scores that year. In a landmark 1978 Supreme Court case "Bakke v. Regents of the University of California" it was ordered that Bakke be admitted but the court still allowed race to be taken into consideration as a "plus factor". Affirmative action remains contentious to this day.
