Rosette Anday - Des Mädchens Klage (Schubert)

with Franz Rupp (piano). Polydor master 1242 bm I, rec. Berlin, summer 1928. The career of Piroska Rosette Anday was nothing but phenomenal. She was a real "Wunderkind" and first studied philology at the Budapest university and violin with Hubay before her voice was discovered. She then took lessons from Mme Charles Cahier, Georg Anthes and Gino Tessari. She made her debut at the Budapest National Opera in 1920 - she was 17 at that time! The next year she made a guest appearance at the Vienna State opera and was offered a contract immediately. She stayed there for 40 years, with the exception of the years between 1938 and 1945, when the Nazi regime would not tolerate the appearance of a Jewish singer. Her marriage with an Aryan lawyer protected her against deportation, but she rather left the country and settled in her native country until the war was over. When she retired from the stage in 1961 she was made an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera. Concert work was always important to Anday, and as early as 1924 she had recorded several Korngold songs with the composer at the piano. In the Schubert year 1928 she recorded four of that composers song for Polydor, of which this is one. Obviously not recorded in a small studio, but in a concert hall, this shows her impressive voice and great interpretative maturity at an age where many singers are just finishing their studies.
