Ghost of Frankenstein preview 1942

Here's a classic preview for "Ghost of Frankenstein," from 1942! This 4th film in the Frankenstein series marks a big change, as the monster is played by someone other than Boris Karloff for the first time (Lon Chaney Jr. assumes the role here, in his quest to play all the classic Universal monsters). The law of diminishing returns is in effect, with this film not living up to its predecessors, but it still has a lot of heart and features a second turn for Bela Lugosi as evil shepherd Ygor. Lugosi is continually and unfairly condemned for his post-"Dracula" output, but here we have yet another great, overlooked performance from this earnest and engaging horror legend. Time was ticking for Universal and horror films in general, however, as there would only be 3 more years until the post-WWII slump hit the genre hard and lasted about 13 years until Hammer revived it with a vengeance. But "Ghost of Frankenstein" is highly enjoyable, and a good example of what Universal was doing in its mid-to-later years. Rent this one and several contemporaries on a rainy day, pop some popcorn and turn down the lights!
