"Going Green: Globalized" CAHS 2000; Section 002

Going Green: Globalized Lucky 13 has come up with a creative, interesting, and fun way to show how our society is going green. When one first hears the phrase going green, one may automatically think of tree-hugging hippies who have radical ideas about the earth. Our goal in this documentary is to show our class and our world how going green has truly globalized. We begin the video by interviewing Auburn students around campus; most of the students say the same thing about the topic- they either consider it a recycling phase or a movement by seventies fanatics. The documentary then moves into the history of going green. The movement began with the Transcendentalists- the most important of them all was Henry David Thoreau. Thoreaus impact affected the going green epidemic through his book Main Woods on conserving nature and preserving wildlife forests. In addition, Teddy Roosevelt impacted the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916 through his visit to Yosemite in 1903. After Roosevelts movement, the going green epidemic came to a halt due to the Great Depression and World War. Our documentary then proceeds to the time periods of the seventies and eighties and the different events that occurred during these eras. After the history we move on to show how the internet has promoted the green movement. Various web pages such as facebook, twitter, ourearth.org, and simplesteps.com reveal the impact that the different sites have on the globe. For the medias influence on going green, we discuss different celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Jake Gyllenhaal, Victoria Secret, Target, and H&M who promote the green movement through their clothing or products. For politics, we focused on the campaigns of John McCain and President Barack Obama and how they promoted conserving energy and the environment in their platforms. Another political figure discussed in our project is Arnold Schwarzenegger and his Global Warming Solutions Act, which was a stepping-stone in promoting global warming awareness in California. Then our documentary explores the global scale of going green, and various figures who have notably influenced their communities around the world such as in Kenya, Greece and Australia. After exploring their accomplishments, we state the influence of all of politics, the internet and media combined on the globalization of going green , while conceding that many individuals still have a ways to go on their personal journeys to true global sustainability and going green.
