Along with climate change, the Volga basin is under pressure from human activity, industrial waste and chemical pollution being the most serious. For the past 40 years scientists have been studying the evolution of its ecosystems. As major rivers flowing through large European cities face similar problems, Russian and European researchers plan to work together on initiatives such as the Cabri-Volga project.
