Very Long Road Train

The Stuart Highway, also known as 'Explorer Highway, starts at Port Augusta in the south and goes north for 1227km to Alice Springs. Named after John McDouall Stuart 1815-1866 Originally from Scotland, Stuart sailed for South Australia at the age of 23. There he became a private suveyor, a farmer and an explorer. Stuart led six expeditions exploring inner Australia and in 1862 found a route across the continent between the north and south coastlines. The Overland Telegraph Line, Connecting Adelaide and the rest of Australia, through Darwin, with England by means of a single wire in 1872, at the time called one of the greatest engineering achievements of the nineteenth century was constructed along his route.
