Gli affreschi di palazzo Schifanoia

Il Palazzo Schifanoia è una costruzione di Ferrara, risalente al 1385, oggi sede di un museo. Venne eretto su commissione di Alberto d'Este e poi trasformato e ampliato soprattutto all'epoca di Borso d'Este. Il nome voleva sottolineare il suo carattere di divertissement (letteralmente significa "che schiva la noia"). Il palazzo è soprattutto famoso per gli affreschi del Salone dei Mesi, tra i cicli pittorici parietali più importanti del Quattrocento italiano. Progettato da Cosmè Tura e dall'astrologo Pellegrino Prisciani, vi parteciparono collettivamente i migliori pittori della scuola ferrarese, tra i quali Francesco del Cossa ed Ercole de' Roberti. Il nome deriva dalle personificazioni dei mesi dell'anno, a ciascuno dei quali corrisponde un segno zodiacale e allegorie con le attività lavorative correlate. La fascia inferiore è decorata inoltre da Episodi della vita di Borso d'Este e quella superiore dai Trionfi degli dei. Ci sono pervenuti solo i mesi da Marzo a Settembre, leggibili in senso antiorario. Palazzo Schifanoia is a Renaissance palace in Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna (Italy) built for the Este family. The name "Schifanoia" is thought to originate from "schivar la noia" meaning literally to "escape from boredom" which describes accurately the original intention of the palazzo and the other villas in close proximity where the Este court relaxed. The highlights of its decorations are the allegorical frescoes with details in tempera by or after Francesco del Cossa and Cosmè Tura, executed ca 1469-70, a unique survival of their time. There, in the Salone dei Mesi ("Hall of the Months"), Cosimo Tura's purely pagan cycle of the months presents the cycle of the year as an allegorical pageant with the appropriate Olympian gods presiding on their fanciful cars drawn by the beasts proper to each deity, with appropriate personifications of the constellations of the zodiac. The frescoes were realized circa 1469-70 by artisans of the d'Este household, the larger figures based on cartoons by Cosmé Tura, and the vignettes of the labors of the year and the activities of the Ferrarese court under the benevolent eye of Borso d'Este, flanked by astrological figures to designs by Francesco del Cossa and Ercole de' Roberti. The learned and elaborate scheme of the allegorical presentations must have come from the immediate circle of Borso d'Este, perhaps from the court astrologer, Pellegrino Prisciani, with some details drawn from Boccaccio's Genealogia deorum.
