Berlin - Tunnelhaus
Escape tunnel underneath the Wall --- TV-report about a famous tunnel that had been secretly build to get East Germans out of the country underneath the Wall in the 60's. There had been a number of them, but this is certainly the most famous one. You can see Hasso Herschel, one of the makers of the tunnel, in the film. The making of the tunnel had been filmed 'on location' by american NBC at the time (black & white coverage shown) and a movie was made of the story, based on the true facts, in 2000. As you can see, the house, where the tunnel ended, still exits, whereas the abandonned factory building in the west, where the digging had started, has long been demolished. The 'tunnelhouse' is very likely to be renovated still in 2007, very likely disposing itself thereby of most, may be all, of its present inhabitants. Hasso Herschel, maker of the tunnel, is though planning to open a memorial site in the house after the reconstruction, if agreed by the house owner.
