New York Cast Rehearses LUCASVILLE

NYC 2008 Fringe Festival participants practice LUCASVILLE: THE UNTOLD STORY OF A PRISON UPRISING. Based on true events, court transcripts and interviews, the play is drawn from the book of the same name by author and historian Staughton Lynd. It was performed on tour in Ohio in 2007 and this recorded movie is from a staged reading in Youngstown, Ohio in April 2008. It has been selected as one of 200 shows for the annual off-Broadway arts festival in the Village of New York City. It is based on the events leading up to and including the 1993 riots at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. It lasted 11 days. 1 guard, Robert Vallandingham, and 9 prisoners were killed. 5 men are now on death row because of it. Did conditions inside warrant a riot? Who was calling the shots? It is not meant to glorify either side. The thought-provoking piece generates controversy and discussions.
