French Chansons Barbra Streisand & Steve Lawrence

This is a tribute video to Barbra Streisand on the ocassion of being inducted into the French Legion of Honor on June 28th, 2007. "Officier de la Légion d'Honneur". 1963.- New York. The producers of the Broadway Musical FUNNY GIRL were casting the leading role of Fanny Brice. Mary Martin, Anne Bancroft, and Carol Burnett were being considered. Also Eydie Gorme was offered the role of Fanny Brice, but she would only accept if her husband Steve Lawrence would play the role of Nicky Arnstein. Enter 21 year old "newcomer" Barbra Streisand,and the rest is Broadway history. Many have wondered what if Steve Lawrence would have played the role of Nicky Arnstein? In the period 1964-1966 Steve Lawrence and Barbra Streisand began recording the songs of french composer MICHEL LEGRAND. Steve Lawrence version of I WILL WAIT FOR YOU from the film THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG rose on the hit parade, with a fanstastic arrangement by the great Don Costa. Barbra introduced some french songs in her TV special COLOR ME BARBRA, and in 1966 released a french LP titled JE M'APPELLE BARBRA, arranged by MICHEL LEGRAND. In 1983, Barbra Streisand made her debut as a film director with the film YENTL, for which MICHEL LEGRAND composed the music. with lyrics provided by ALAN and MARILYN BERGMAN. They received an Academy Award ( OSCAR) for best original song score.
