This unit is separated by a regional unconformity from the underlying Pretoria Group, which is composed of sedimentary layers and volcanic strata that include both calcalkaline and tholeiitic varieties [7,8]. Schweitzer et al. [9] proposed that the Rooiberg Group should be divided, in ascending order, into four formations: Dullstroom, Damwal, Kwaggasnek, and Schrikkloof. The Dullstroom Formation is composed of a sequence of felsic and mafic volcanic layers interbedded with sedimentary rocks [2].
