Powerhouses reload for another big season Greater Metro boasts two defending state champs; ATHLETES TO WATCH Jacob Banas, sr., Cedarburg: Banas, a goalkeeper-defender, is a highly touted transfer from Milwaukee Marquette. He left school at Marquette after the 1997 soccer season, moving to Florida to play at a year-round training facility sponsored by Adidas. Nick Walls, sr., Wauwatosa East: Walls, a midfielder, plays for the Milwaukee Kickers nationals U-17 team as well as with the Red Raiders. "He's very, very fast and understands the game real well," Kickers coach Tony Wright said. "He's really a relentless worker." Brett Wiesner, so., Brookfield East: Wiesner started on the Spartans' front line as a freshman, teaming with all-state selection Sean Reti. Now that Reti has graduated, Wiesner will be counted on as the Spartans' primary scorer. Wiesner is a member of the U.S. U-16 boys national team. Matt Miller, sr., Marquette: Miller will orchestrate the Hilltoppers' attack from the midfield. "he's our man," said Marquette coach Bob Spielmann. `He's real solid, strong, and has the ability to beat people on the dribble." Brad Falk, sr., Mukwonago: Falk, midfielder, is a superior athlete who took up the sport at a young age and simply got better and better. A member of the Milwaukee Kickers U-17 national team, he has size and speed all in one intimidating package. "He's so strong, and very skillful," Wright said. Gustavo Salazar, sr., Milwaukee South: Salazar, a defender, was a basketball player who quickly adapted to soccer. He started last season on the junior varsity but quickly moved into a regular role for the City Conference champion and could be used as a sweeper this season. Pat Wiseman, sr., Homestead: Wiseman, a forward, led the Highlanders in goals and assists last season and was named a North Shore all-conference selection and Ozaukee County player of the year. "He's one of those guys you absolutely can build a team around," said Homestead coach Thom Homann. Joel DaPra, jr., Racine St. Catherine's: Joel, a forward, keeps the DaPra name in the line-up after his brother, Dominic, took his jet-like speed and scoring skills to St. Louis University. "He doesn't have that savvy yet," Angels coach Tony Guinn said of any comparisons to Dominic. "There are alot of similarities in their abilities on the ball, to take people on and shoot the ball with both feet." Chad Dombrowski, sr., West Allis Hale: Dombrowski, a defender, was a key member of the Huskies team that finished 3-4 in the rugged Greater Metro Conference a year ago. He's back to anchor the Hale defense. Kane Smart, jr., Brookfield Central: Smart, a defender, starred as a sophomore and will be a leader for a still young Lancers team.
