The 6th Taishin Arts Award Exhibition - National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan, R.O.C., NSO R. Strauss Cycle 5 - Ein Heldenleben National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan, R. O. C. / Biography The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), also known as Philharmonia Taiwan, was founded in 1986 by the Ministry of Education to develop musical education, promote cultural construction and upgrade people's livelihood. On August 1, 2005, the NSO became an artistic affiliate of the National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center. The NSO has flourished through government support and a growing audience base. Since its founding, more than 1000 performances have been given, mostly at its resident venue, the National Concert Hall in Taipei. Additionally, tours were regularly conducted throughout Taiwan and overseas, in places such as Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Sapporo. The NSO has proudly cooperated with and accompanied more than three hundred internationally acclaimed musicians including guest conductors: Lorin Maazel, Shao-Chia Lü, Kek-Tjiang Lim, Uri Mayer, Joseph Silverstein, Gerard Schwarz, Rudolf Barshai, Gunther Herbig and others. The NSO has been led by two noted principle conductors Gerard Akoka, and Urs Schneider, and music director Tsang-Houei Hsu, Da-Shen Chang, Jahja Ling and Wen-Pin Chien. During Chien's tenure from 2001 to 2007, the NSO has rapidly explored a wide -- and wild -- range of repertoires, which includes: the Symphony Cycles from Beethoven, Mahler, D. Shostakovich, Richard Strauss and Tchaikovsky for the forthcoming season. The NSO also enjoyed electrifying opera productions with inspiring stage directors such as world-renown choreographer and founder of the Cloudgate Company, Lin Hwai-Min for Tosca, and director and founder of PWSHOP, Stanly Lai for Le nozze di Figaro. The NSO has also completed six other operas, employing crossover or even experimental interpretation within the scheme of the "concert hall opera." In the 2006-2007 season as well as being the 20th anniversary of the NSO, we presented the Taiwan premier of Der Ring des Niblungen and Der Rosenkavalier, a co-production with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, which included an outstanding cast and resulted in great success. The NSO has not only built an impressive and extensive repertoire from classical to contemporary music, but also, with commission and premier works devoted to promoting the music of Taiwanese composers. The NSO will continue to bring in all possible elements to enrich our performances as well as fulfill its mission as the flagship classical ensemble of the country.
