Torstel Nils Wiesel es miembro del comité científico de la Fundación Ideas. Neurobiólogo sueco ganador del Premio Nobel de Medicina en 1981. Presidente de la universidad Rockefeller de Nueva York desde 1991, también es Secretario General del Programa de Ciencia Frontera Humana. Consejero asesor de diferentes países y organizaciones, se ha centrado en la creación de oportunidades para que científicos jóvenes puedan llevar a cabo investigación independiente. Sirve en la Junta del Nuevo Centro sobre Cambio Climático y en la Junta asesora del Instituto Europeo para la Investigación Cerebral. En 2007 la Organización Mundial del Ojo estableció el Instituto de Investigación Torsten Wiesel en un hospital de Chengdu, China, dedicado a la investigación clínica en materia de enfermedades del ojo, de gran incidencia en Asia. Torsten Nils Wiesel (born June 3, 1924) is a member of the Ideas Foundation Scientific Committee. Torsten Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1981 in recognition of his pioneering work on the neural basis of visual perception, carried out at Harvard Medical School in collaboration with David Hubel. He served as President of the Rockefeller University from 1991-1998. In 2005, he was awarded the National Medal of Science, USA, in recognition of his scientific excellence and leadership in the promotion of international scientific collaboration, principally as Secretary General of the Human Frontier Science Program from 2000-2009. He currently co-chairs the Board of Governors of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan, chairs the Scientific Council of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization and serves on the Board of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. He is a member of many distinguished societies, including the Royal Society, the National Academy of Sciences (USA), the American Philosophical Society, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
